It’s been said time and time again: Horror and Porn are kindred spirits. And what’s wrong with that? Gory set pieces have become so elaborate, they cry out for a good, old fashioned money shot. Sometimes, horror filmmakers bless us with a little extra reach-around, better known as the slow motion.
So here, for your viewing pleasure, are a few prime examples of this naughty extra umph:
Betsy Palmer helps nail it with her facial expression. “Oh, dear!” What good money shot is complete without the obligatory open mouthed reaction?
2. Zombi 2
This one begins at 1:55, and also happens to be one of the most graphic throat rips ever committed to the silver screen. It’s no surprise that this shining example comes to us from the Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci. We slow down to the point where we hear the blood gushing. How gratuitous is that?
3. Scanners
David Cronenberg: “Hold on. Let’s slow down and really savor the chunks.” One of the most infamous head pops in horror history, and with good reason.
4. Opera
Not necessarily the bloodiest, but definitely among the most gratuitous on so many levels. The build up leaves us blue, but when the killer finally fires off his gun, it shakes the entire room.
Honestly, it’s no mere coincidence that most slow motion gore sequences involve the face and head. Just sayin’.
6. Maniac
Maniac provides perhaps the best example of the horror money shot. That poor gal gets a hearty face-full of the red stuff. At least it didn’t really get in her hair. How considerate.
The head honcho of the slow motion gore scene. Pretty much every other death/mutilation is in slow mo!
